Care begins with respect

Living with viral hepatitis can also mean facing prejudice, exclusion or unfair treatment. Misconceptions can affect relationships, work and wellbeing, as described by the World Hepatitis Alliance's work on stigma.

Every person deserves to be heard and treated with dignity. At MOBHOPE, understanding people's experiences is part of bringing care closer to communities. Addressing stigma means making room for those experiences in the way we think about and organise services.

Measuring stigma in MOBHOPE

MOBHOPE will examine and measure stigma among people with viral hepatitis using tools from the World Hepatitis Alliance (WHA) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). A memorandum of understanding has been signed for this work, and the questionnaires have already been deployed in our three mobile units.

The purpose is to understand the experiences of people reached by the units and make stigma visible within the project. Listening, recording experiences and discussing what they mean form part of this work.

The tools behind this work

WHA and ECDC jointly developed a survey on hepatitis B and C stigma. It explores discrimination and quality of life. Read the WHA survey overview and the ECDC pilot report.

Three mobile units, a shared commitment

  • Spain: the UMC mobile unit of Madrid Positivo.
  • Portugal: the mobile unit of Ares do Pinhal (ADP).
  • Croatia: the mobile unit of Hepatos.

The European project is coordinated by the Fundación para la Investigación Biomédica del Hospital Gregorio Marañón (FIBHGM).
