MOBHOPE was represented at the FOCUS Partner Summit 2026, held from 13 to 15 October in Foster City, in the San Francisco Bay Area, with virtual participation also available. Organised by Gilead Sciences, the summit brought together healthcare professionals, community organisations and public health leaders to exchange approaches to screening, diagnosis and linkage to care for HIV and viral hepatitis.

Pablo Ryan presented data from Madrid’s mobile screening unit and highlighted its participation in MOBHOPE. The contribution showed the value of taking services into the community and connecting screening with specialist care for people who face barriers to conventional health services.

The international symposium on FOCUS Spain and Portugal, held on 13 October, also featured Jorge Garrido from Apoyo Positivo in Madrid, Mariana Vicente from GAT Portugal, and Vítor Magno Pereira from the Hospital of Funchal in Madeira. Their contributions shared data and experience from different community and healthcare settings, highlighting the breadth of the Iberian FOCUS network.

The programme also included a discussion on public–private partnerships in high-impact settings. Conversations with mobile outreach teams and other services reaching underserved populations offered practical lessons on building trust, adapting services to local needs and helping people remain connected to care. Exchanges around the posters created further opportunities to meet colleagues and explore future collaboration.

The accompanying video introduces the Madrid mobile unit’s work since 2019. It shows how an outreach educator, a nurse and a social worker build trust, explain screening and support referral to specialist services. It also describes the unit’s participation in MOBHOPE and the project’s aim of sharing and standardising mobile care approaches across countries.

For MOBHOPE, the summit was an opportunity to share experience and strengthen international connections around accessible, person-centred care. MOBHOPE is co-funded by the European Union through EU4Health; the summit was organised within Gilead’s FOCUS programme.

About MOBHOPE

MOBHOPE — Mobile Hepatitis Outreach and Prevention Effort — is co-funded by the European Union through the EU4Health Programme. Running from 2025 to 2028, it aims to strengthen, standardise and expand mobile healthcare for people at increased risk of HIV, sexually transmitted infections, viral hepatitis and liver disease.

The project is coordinated by the Fundación para la Investigación Biomédica del Hospital Gregorio Marañón in Spain. Its three mobile outreach units are run by Madrid Positivo (UMC) in Spain, Ares do Pinhal (ADP) in Portugal and Hepatos in Croatia, bringing clinical, public health and community experience together.

Through mobile clinics, point-of-care diagnostics, community engagement and operational research, MOBHOPE works towards earlier diagnosis, better access to care and fewer health inequalities. Understanding social barriers and developing a shared European service package are central to creating tools and practices that other services can adopt.
